Magic Hat Roxy Rolles

Amber/Red Ale

Magic Hat's Roxy Rolles is a middle of the road take on the specialty holiday beer. Where some holiday beers are loaded up with hops or thick with spices and malty goodness, Roxy Rolles is a pretty straightforward amber ale. Deep amber in color with a sweet nose, spicy start and sweet, malty finish, this beer is a pretty well-balanced American Amber. While it won't wow your holiday party guests, its a very drinkable option on a cold Vermont night.

Hoppy beers & the Red Sox have been passions of mine since in moved to Boston in 1992.  So when I saw Wachusett Brewing Company's Green Monsta Ale - described as a BIG pale ale - I had to get a six pack.

Smoke-Flavored Beer

I stumbled upon this beer at Pete's Waterfront Ale House in Brooklyn and ordered it mostly because I had no idea what a Rauchfetzen was. The bar tender described it as a smoky ale so I hesitated - assuming it might destroy my palate before dinner - but decided to give it a go. I must have liked it because I ordered several more. In fact, I did like it quite a bit. I would describe it as very respectable ale with a hint of smoke in the background.

In the midst of last minute shopping on Dec 24th, I stopped to pick up some holiday beers to bring along on the Christmas party circuit.  Based on how much I liked Wachusett's Green Monsta Ale, I was eyeing their Winter Ale - but scotch ale's just don't do it for me.  While looking for alternatives, the clerk at the package store recommended Blue Moon's Full Moon Winter Ale.

I was at a holiday party a few days ago and the host had one of the ubiquitous holiday variety 12-packs, this time from Boston's Harpoon Brewery.  You know the ones - its full of beers you never knew the brewery actually brewed.  Its the beer industry equivalent of seafood stew - would anyone ever try a cranberry lambic without the help of a variety pack?

As I wrote about previously, I'm a sucker for cheap, regional beer brands.  I'm a huge fan of Narragansett Beer - who doesn't want to "Grab a 'Gansett?" But when I saw they also brew a Narragansett Bock beer I was...

Beer Barter Banned!!!

NewYork1 is a cable news channel in this quaint little metropolis I call home. It has many fine qualities that set it apart from the usual dross that typically characterizes local stations. For example, they always broadcast the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in its entirety. There's also a cool feature called "On This Day in New York City History".

I Dream About Beer

02 Dec 2008

This is my first blog post (ever) so let me provide a little context to my recurring dream. I was a professional brewer for nine years, on both coasts, in brewpubs and a microbrewery (Northampton Brewery, Boston Beer Works and Golden Pacific Brewing Company in the Bay area).  Like many of my peers I graduated from the Siebel Institute of Technology.  I lived beer during that ti

Okay. I’ll admit it. This post is a bit premature. The fact of the matter is that by this time tomorrow, I’ll be in no condition to blog. By then, I hope to have drained several glasses in honor of an act of congress.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of Prohibition's repeal.

Looking back, seventy five years ago doesn't really seem that long ago.  Luckily for us, common sense prevailed and today we can celebrate the few remaining vestiges of the temperance movement in modern society.

Thank you Carrie Nation - bar room smasher, vaudeville actress and general pain in the arse.  She made the slogan "All Nations Welcome But Carrie" a bar-room staple.  Are there other photos of axe-wielding bible thumpers on Flickr? Doubtful.

Beer on Bourbon St

14 Dec 2008

I spent this week in New Orleans at the Do It with Drupal conference and enjoying some of Dixie's outstanding local beers.

It was my first trip to New Orleans and Bourbon St lived up to expectations (good and bad), but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the local brews too.  Mix in a bourbon sampler trays, lots of oysters, alligator sausage, po' boys and mechanical bull rides - good times all around.
