Sierra Nevada's Estate Brewers Harvest Ale is a beer makers play on the regional winemakers focus on their terrior, the flavor characteristics produced by the unique local environmental conditions - the fertile soil, rainfall and Central Valley setting. All of the hops and barley used in this beer are grown on-site and, given the brewery's long time affinity for pale ales, the resulting beer is a reflection of their passion for aromatic, hoppy beers.

Visiting my brother Brett and trying some new IPAs. Its the first warm day of the summer (its only July 11th) and the fruity, citrusy cascade hop flavor makes a refreshing counterpart to the afternoon.

My ongoing IPA quest continues. This week its Magic Hat Lucky Kat IPA. I must admit to mixed experiences with Magic Hat's brews - they are hit or miss for me, although #9 is a good outdoor summer beer.

With some surprise, Lucky Kat may rank as my favorite of the Magic Hat elixirs. Its a little darker than most IPA's, some Munich and Crystal malt is in there to give it a deeper copper color than you see with most IPAs. The result is a thick, fluffy head when poured with nice lacing on the glass and very little haze.

The release of Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA has spurred me on a full-on IPA quest to taste the best of the bitter beers. Today its one of the first American IPAs, Anchor Liberty.

The folks at Anchor have been brewing great beers for a long time and Liberty Ale, first brewing in 1975 ranks up at the top of my hophead list. According to Anchor:

Opa Opa IPA

This IPA has a deep copper color, a little darker than a typical IPA, but very clear with no haze. It poured with almost no head - what little there was disappeared quickly. Checking other reviews - this is consistent across all of them. Someone should start tweaking their carbonation or bottle conditioning process because there's a problem when a beer pours without a head.

When you get a good batch (and therein lies the rub) this is one of my favorite beers.  I remember when Todd Mott, the brewer who designed the first version Harpoon IPA, started bottling this beer.  At its best Harpoon IPA has a good hop nose, pours well (good bottle conditioning) and is carbonated properly.  The malt provides the proper balance to the hops and the finish is bitter by not overly so--it makes you want to open another bottle/order another pint!  However, over the years my wife and I have noticed consistency problems with the IPA--stretc

Somewhere along the line, I decided I wasn't interested in Wachusett beers. Maybe its all their fruit beers or a less than positive experience back in their early days.

Whatever happened, its only recently that I discovered the hoppy Green Monsta Ale and rediscovered a hidden gem here in Massachusetts. It turns out, the brewers at Wachusett love their hops. And it was with some excitement that I tried their IPA.

Dogfish Head is an East Coast brewery that is hard to avoid these days.  Features in the New Yorker and on the Discovery Channel speak to the effectiveness of the marketing department.  With a reputation of hoppy beers, I had to jump in and try for myself.

Beer on Bourbon St

14 Dec 2008

I spent this week in New Orleans at the Do It with Drupal conference and enjoying some of Dixie's outstanding local beers.

It was my first trip to New Orleans and Bourbon St lived up to expectations (good and bad), but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the local brews too.  Mix in a bourbon sampler trays, lots of oysters, alligator sausage, po' boys and mechanical bull rides - good times all around.
