Where is it Brewed?:
Cooperstown, NY
Style:
Abbey Ale

With a loud pop, I opened my 25 oz Ommegang Abbey AleOmmegang brought authentic Belgian beer styles to upstate New York in 1997.  Now part of the Duvel family of beers, Ommegang continues to produce an impressive array of authentic Belgian beer styles.

Its deep brown color and creamy, almost fluffy head offer a great visual accompaniment to this malty brew.  The nose is rich and sweet, with vanilla, caramel and chocolate notes.  With the first sip, it actually tastes less sweet that I imagined.  Nicely balanced, it starts malty with caramel flavors, but the hops blend in to give it a crisp, dry finish.

Bottle fermentation gives this beer a complexity and richness that is unique among US brewed Belgian ales - an outstanding beer.
