The release of Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA has spurred me on a full-on IPA quest to taste the best of the bitter beers. Today its one of the first American IPAs, Anchor Liberty.
The folks at Anchor have been brewing great beers for a long time and Liberty Ale, first brewing in 1975 ranks up at the top of my hophead list. According to Anchor:
Liberty Ale was first introduced on April 18th, 1975 to commemorate the bicentennial of the famous ride by Paul Revere.
The Liberty is light copper in color, much lighter than many of the IPAs I've had recently. Its also got a bit of a haze to it, likely due to a combination of the dry hops added during secondary fermentation and the fact that the beer was stored at room temperature on the shelves at my local package store.
The nose has a subtle floral character, with citrus and pine notes. This beer starts outs malty and a little sweet - more than I expect - but the hops stand up and assert themselves. Its a well balanced, drinkable IPA - hoppy and bitter but not overly dry or oily in the finish.
