In a word, this beer straight up rocks - get a six pack now.
New IPAs from major craft breweries is not an everyday experience, so I was surprised to come across Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA this weekend at my local craft brew store. As it turns out, this beer was just released by Sierra Nevada - a year round IPA. Chico CA's finest brewery is one of my favorites - for their ubiquitous Pale Ale, Summerfest lager and choc-full-a-hops Celebration Ale. And the introduction of a year round IPA only reinforces the status of one of my favorites.
Torpedo Extra IPA is a brilliant copper color with no haze at all and a lacy foam head. The nose is big citrus-y hops - grapefruit and floral. The beer starts bitter, with pine and spice notes, and has a well balanced, medium body. It doesn't have a long bitter finish, a la Celebration, but finishes clean without the lingering dryness of many IPAs.
Sierra Nevada makes a big deal about the fact the beer is brewed with 100% whole hops, with no extracts or pellets. This decision pays off in big ways as this beer sacrifices nothing in aroma and bitterness at the start, but finishes clean - rather than being overwhelmed by hop oils at the end.
A stellar addition the the Sierra Nevada family. Well done.
