Spring eventually arrives each year in New England, albeit 4-6 weeks after the Red Sox season starts and about 8 weeks after I've had enough of snow & cold - despite my beer gloves.

Once it does warm up, though, my mind switches to one of my favorite beer styles - German Hefeweizen. "Hefe" means yeast, "Weizen" means wheat. Hefeweizen is a top fermented, unfiltered, bottle conditioned wheat beer with a noticeable yeast sediment and a cloudy appearance.

Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen in an anomaly - a hefeweizen in marketing only, its actually a good wheat beer.

It pours clear and looks filtered - despite marketing as an unfiltered beer, the folks at Harpoon clearly are appealing to the people who react to the thick, cloudy appearance of with a furrowed brow.

The aroma has banana notes, but not a lot of esters. And despite the use of protein-heavy wheat, the beer pours with very little head.

Wheat Beer

Despite the disappearance of the sun and constant rain over the past few weeks, I've been drinking wheat and weizen beers to celebrate the coming of summer (any day now). And lately, my beer of choice has been Anchor Summer Beer.

While its been brewed since 1984, I do not remember ever buying this beer until 3 or 4 weeks ago. Now I'm wondering what I was waiting for.

My ongoing IPA quest continues. This week its Magic Hat Lucky Kat IPA. I must admit to mixed experiences with Magic Hat's brews - they are hit or miss for me, although #9 is a good outdoor summer beer.

With some surprise, Lucky Kat may rank as my favorite of the Magic Hat elixirs. Its a little darker than most IPA's, some Munich and Crystal malt is in there to give it a deeper copper color than you see with most IPAs. The result is a thick, fluffy head when poured with nice lacing on the glass and very little haze.

The release of Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA has spurred me on a full-on IPA quest to taste the best of the bitter beers. Today its one of the first American IPAs, Anchor Liberty.

The folks at Anchor have been brewing great beers for a long time and Liberty Ale, first brewing in 1975 ranks up at the top of my hophead list. According to Anchor:

This IPA has a deep copper color, a little darker than a typical IPA, but very clear with no haze. It poured with almost no head - what little there was disappeared quickly. Checking other reviews - this is consistent across all of them. Someone should start tweaking their carbonation or bottle conditioning process because there's a problem when a beer pours without a head.
